Tyler recently took some time out from his busy schedule to meet with ModelsHealth and tell us a little about himself.
MH: Hi Tyler, thanks so much for taking some time out to meet with us. You are looking great shape today, did you start working out from a young age?
Tyler: Yes and no! I first started training at the beginning of high school, but that only lasted for a few months. I got back into it, in a serious way, at around age 17. Since then I have been training 6 days a week for almost 9 yrs now.
MH: 6 days a week every week can be pretty grueling, what keeps you motivated?
Tyler: It is all about getting my body into the best shape that it can be in and MAINTAINING it. But its not just about working harder/getting stronger and looking better, but finding new ways of being more creative and efficient with the time that I spend in the gym whilst managing to maintain my shape. Keeping it fun is important too, playing different sports and finding ways that are not so traditional/gym based and basic to keep me from getting bored.
MH: Any not so traditional techniques that you want to share with us? What is the weirdest way you keep in shape?
I would have to say doing my cardio (with a weighted back-pack on with bricks) and incorperating walking lunges, jump squats, spider-man crawl(and the list goes on) some might consider weird especially when I go back to my small hometown and people just give me the weirdest looks haha
MH: Thanks for that! Back to being traditional, what single gym based exercise has given you the best results?
Tyler: Heavy walking barbell lunges (gotta love being a white boy with a BUTT lol) backwards walking followed by forwards. The non-stop tension placed on your hamstring/quads/glutes (not to mention core strength & stability)really gives me gains while at the same time really increasing your heart rate.
MH: When it comes to a ModelsHealth shoot the one thing we stress, its all about the abs. From a photography point of view it makes or breaks the picture. What is your secret for getting ripped abs?
Tyler: It is no secret, one word, DIET! It is no use training hard if you dont pay attention to what you eat and when you eat it. This is why I write more online diets for people then I actually train in person. Going to the gym alone is not going to get you super RIPPED unless you are a gentic freak which there aren`t many of. There are certain exercises which I will have videos of on my website soon, which target different regions or for more info on a personalized plan from me you can always email: Tyler@TylerSarry.com
MH: As you know our website is not just about getting your body fit, but about showing it as a model. When did you first get interested in Fitness Modelling? And do you think you are now primarily a Personal Trainer or model?
I worked out vigourously & always ate clean for serveral years before my post-secondary schooling. In my first year of college a friend of mine named Patrick Bochart who now runs www.crosstrainer.ca (which is an online program for trainers) had mentioned fitness modeling. Which at the time I had never heard of but he put me in contact with a fellow model which got me started. Five months later I competed in my first show which I placed 4th then came back the next year and won it!
As for the modelling vs. Training aspect, if you had asked me this a month ago I would have told you TRAINER! But I moved to Los Angeles several weeks ago to pursue more of the acting side of things and to attain more fitness publications/covers, which will be out soon
MH: what have been your fitness modelling highlights?
Tyler: I received my FAME fitness Pro Card back in 2005 when I won my first show. I competed in a multitude of shows across North America with top places. Then last June I won the MuscleMania Model Universe Championships which is the biggest fitness modeling convention in the world. I will also be attending the Universe show in 2010 as a presenter/panelist.
MH: Do you think other models treat you differently because you are a qualified personal trainer?
No, I dont believe anyone in the fitness modeling world really gets treated differently whether qualified or not. The only thing it might do is get you into a job position that someone might not get without being qualified. There are many models out there that have the experience to be great trainers, but just train themselves out of the love for it and dont want to actually be one-on-one training others.
MH: What has been your most fun or unusual modeling assignment?
Now thats not really a hard one to answer. Any job I have had past/present/future is a blessing, I get to do what I love and basically get paid to show off what I have worked so hard to attain. Getting paid for doing something I always have had a passion for is amazing (and it doesnt hurt if your next to another girl in her underwear)
MH: We hear you are planning a move to LA? What do you think the future holds? what are you ambitions for starting a new life?
Yes, As I stated above I recently moved to LA LA Land. It is tough for me still as I am figuring out my work VISA so if I land a gig I can actually pursue it. I am originally from Canada so unless I have a relative (which I dont) or plan on getting married (which I dont plan on anytime soon) it is a little more difficult than it use to be. I should have everything figured out by the end of June when I head back to Canada after the Model Universe Competition. Other than that I am taking acting workshops & pursuing different fitness publications right now, shooting to attain Cover Status in the coming months.
MH: Thanks Tyler, we really appreciate you spending the time talking to us. Finally Is there anywhere that people can go to find out more about you?
Thought you would never ask, I now have two different websites listed below and if anyone is interested in online training/diet preparation (including fitness model to bodybuilding competitors) they can contact me at Tyler@TylerSarry.com
Thanks again Models Health and I look forward to more coverage on your site in the near future
